Ingrown Toenails

INGROWN TOENAILS

WHAT ARE INGROWN TOENAILS AND HOW ARE THEY CAUSED?

Ingrown toenails are a common condition that involves the toenail growing into the soft flesh surrounding the toenail. As a result, most patients experience redness, pain, and possible swelling of the area. If left unaddressed, ingrown toenails can progress into an infection of the tissue and/or bone.

Ingrown toenails can be caused by a variety of factors, including conditions that cause poor blood flow to your feet, such as diabetes, or may simply be a result of wearing poorly fitted shoes.

COMMON SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Pain and tenderness near your toenail
  • Swelling and redness around the toenail
  • Signs of infection of the tissue surrounding your toenail

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Many patients opt to treat ingrown toenails at home, but depending on their severity or if you have other underlying conditions, seeking treatment from a specialist can help to avoid an infection, possible worsening of an infection, and relieve pain and discomfort.
