Corns & Calluses

CORNS AND CALLUSES

WHAT IS A CORN AND CALLUSES AND HOW ARE THEY CAUSED?

Corns and calluses are small, thickened lesions found on the skin of the foot. They are usually formed as a result of repeated pressure, friction, or rubbing, such as caused by a shoe.

While similar to a callus, a corn has a central core of hardened material and are typically smaller in size. Corns tend to develop on parts of the feet that may not bear weight, such as the tops of the feet or between toes. Corns can also be painful when touched.

Calluses are not usually painful and re more prevalent on the soles of the feet, including the ball of the foot or the heel. They can vary in size and are typically larger than corns.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Since corns and calluses are commonly formed as a result of rubbing/pressure, correcting any ill-fitting shoes, avoiding activity, or addressing any underlying condition (such as a hammertoe) may be enough to remedy the problem. If the underlying cause not resolved, the corn or callus is more likely to return.

Avoid attempting to remove the corn or callus at home, as this can result in a serious infection. Contact our office to assess and determine the proper treatment to resolve your issue.
